Roberto Cantoni's research focuses on political ecology and energy justice, exploring the dynamics of low-carbon energy infrastructures  and energy transition in Europe and Africa. He has a background in history of science and technology.

Roberto was trained as a physicist (MSc) before moving into the humanities and social sciences of energy. Since his PhD, he has conducted research on oil policies during the Cold War, shale gas policies in selected European countries, renewable energy policies and development strategies in North and West Africa and just transition strategies in Europe. For his recent studies, he has applied the theoretical framework of energy justice, addressing issues of distributive, procedural, and recognitional justice in his case studies.
