SITRANS is a pan-European research project initiated by a consortium of universities, NGOs, regional development agencies and research institutes. It facilitates a just and inclusive energy transition in regions heavily impacted by coal phase-out.

Södertälje Science Park is an innovation district in the industrial city of Södertälje. It resulted from close collaboration between the city’s municipality, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the private companies AstraZeneca and Scania.

The Upper Nitra Just Transition Fund region faces the challenge of transitioning from lignite mining to a post-coal era. This reskilling project is implemented by the Trenčín region in collaboration with Slovakia’s largest mining company.

The MINOS factory project is situated in Ierapetra, in the North and South Aegean Islands and Crete Just Transition Fund region. Co-financed by the Cohesion Fund, it transformed the old site into the MINOS Exhibition and Cultural Activities Park.

Since 2000, Karditsa, in Greece, has developed a series of policies, activities to increase accessibility and put sustainable mobility at the forefront of the city’s design to ensure a green transition.

Rybnik, in the historic Silesia region, has a mining legacy and nostalgia that has had a lasting impact on labour markets. Amid coal phase-out, the municipality designed this transformation approach with EIT Climate-KIC and other partners.

In Trencin, Upper Nitra’s Action Plan is a lesson in bottom-up just transition, following extensive consultation and engagement of local stakeholders in its formulation. It aims to facilitate an employment-friendly path to decarbonisation.

The Green Tech Valley includes Just Transition Fund regions Styria and, partially, Carinthia. Styria is an industrial region home to numerous manufacturing companies, but also has an active start-up ecosystem and research and innovation landscape.

In Just Transition Fund regions Asturias, Palencia and Leon, coal mine closures have impacted on the economy and employment. Energy company Iberdrola partnered with two research centres to set up an Open Innovation Platform for a just transition.
